What you need first
- Shopify Admin → Analytics.
- GA4 Admin access (Explorer / Explore, Traffic acquisition, or custom reports).
- Optional: Google Search Console for the store domain.
- A shared doc for the referrer allowlist + last reviewed date.
- Access to export CSV if your Shopify plan/report allows it.
Step 1: Freeze your allowlist and labels
Copy your glossary from the measurement guide, then lock an allowlist you will actually maintain.

Rules:
- Prefer exact hosts you have seen in your own data.
- Write the date you last reviewed the list.
- Do not dump all of Google organic into “AI.”
- Keep a separate label for UTM campaigns you control (
utm_source=ai_experimentor similar).
Expected result: A one-table allowlist your team will not argue about every Monday.
Step 2: Create the Shopify weekly pull
Shopify Analytics labels move. Use the closest sessions / referrer / landing reports you have.
- Open Analytics → traffic / acquisition style reports that show referrer or referring site.
- Set the date range to last 7 days (or your standard week).
- Find or filter rows whose host matches the allowlist.
- Record for each matching host: sessions, (if shown) orders, revenue, top landing paths.
- Export CSV when available and save as
ai-referrers-YYYY-MM-DD.csv. - Add a row for Total store sessions in the same window so AI-strict traffic stays in perspective.
If Shopify cannot filter cleanly, export the full referrer table and filter in a sheet with your allowlist.
Expected result: A dated Shopify extract you can compare week to week.
Step 3: Build a GA4 exploration you can reopen
In GA4:
- Go to Explore → create a free-form exploration (name it
AI referrers - weekly). - Import dimensions: Session source, Session medium, Page referrer and/or Session source / medium (use what your property populates).
- Import metrics: Sessions, Key events or Purchases / Ecommerce purchases, Total revenue if available.
- Add a filter: Session source matches regex (or page referrer contains) for your allowlist hosts. Keep the regex in the shared doc next to the allowlist.
- Add a breakdown by Landing page + query string or Page path so you see which PDPs AI traffic hits.
- Save the exploration. Do not rebuild from scratch each week.
Optional channel hygiene:
- In Admin → Data settings / Channel groups (if you use custom groups), you may map known AI hosts to a custom channel. Only do this if you will maintain it. Wrong mappings pollute every report.
Expected result: One saved GA4 view that answers “how many sessions/purchases from our AI allowlist?”
Step 4: Add Search Console notes (Google AI features only)
If Search Console shows generative AI / AI feature reporting for your property:
- Open the AI-related report Google provides for your site.
- Note clicks and impressions for the same week.
- List top queries or pages if shown.
- Store these as AI-assisted (Google) on the scorecard, separate from the strict referrer allowlist.
This does not measure ChatGPT or Perplexity. It also does not auto-join to Shopify orders.
Expected result: Google AI visibility sits in its own column, not mixed into “ChatGPT revenue.”
Step 5: Fill the weekly scorecard
Use one sheet tab with fixed columns:

Step 6: Act on landings (tracking without action is useless)
When AI-strict sessions grow on a weak PDP:
- Open that landing URL on mobile.
- Run a quick buy-ready check (product page checklist).
- Fix missing specs in text.
- Keep onsite chat ready for paraphrased questions after click-through (AI shopping assistant).
Expected result: Measurement feeds catalog and UX work, not only a slide.
