Product Questions Every Shopify Store Should Answer Before Checkout

A pre-checkout checklist for Shopify: size, fit, compatibility, material, delivery, and returns questions shoppers need answered on the page or in chat.

You will make a pre-checkout answer checklist for your Shopify products: size, fit, compatibility, material, delivery, and returns. Shoppers who cannot find these answers often pause, open a new tab, or leave. Clear answers reduce friction. They do not guarantee a higher conversion rate by themselves.

Put the facts on the product page first. Then use chat or FAQ for the same facts in plain language. For catalog field work, see How to Prepare Shopify Product Data for Accurate AI Answers. For a readiness score, see Ecommerce Product Data Audit: Is Your Shopify Catalog Ready for AI?.

When this applies

Use this checklist if:

  • Carts start and stall on product or shipping uncertainty
  • Support gets the same pre-purchase questions every week
  • Product pages are strong on photos but weak on specs

Pause heavy chat automation if:

  • Core specs still live only in your head or in Slack
  • Policy pages conflict with product-page promises
  • You sell items that need regulated claims you have not reviewed

What you need first

  1. Your top 10 sellers and 5 high-abandon or high-question products.
  2. Shopify Admin edit access for products and pages.
  3. A list of real pre-purchase questions from email, chat, or DMs.
  4. Links to your shipping and returns pages.
  5. Optional: storefront AI chat to re-test after edits (What Is an AI Shopping Assistant?).

Step 1: Map the six question types shoppers ask before checkout

TypeShopper is really askingWhere the answer should live
SizeWhich option do I pick?Variants + size chart / measurements
FitHow will it feel or sit on me?Fit notes on the description
CompatibilityWill this work with my device / setup?Model list + exclusions
MaterialWhat is it made of / safe for me?Materials, care, certifications you can stand behind
DeliveryWhen will it arrive / what does shipping cost?Shipping page + product notes for special ships
ReturnsCan I undo this if it is wrong?Returns / refund policy page

Expected result: Every top SKU has an owner for missing answers in each type that applies.

Step 2: Write answer-ready lines (not ad fluff)

WeakStronger
“True lifestyle essential”“Relaxed fit. Hits at the hip. Size up if between sizes.”
“Fits most devices”“Fits iPhone 15 and 15 Pro. Not for iPhone 14.”
“Premium materials”“Outer: 100% cotton. Filling: recycled polyester.”
“Fast shipping”“Orders placed before 2pm local ship same business day. See shipping page for carrier times.”
“Easy returns”“14 days from delivery. Unused with tags. Start a return from your order email.”

Expected result: A new hire can answer from the page without guessing.

Step 3: Run the pre-checkout checklist on each sample product

Copy this for each of your 10-15 sample SKUs.

Size

  • Variants use clear labels shoppers say out loud
  • Measurements or size chart linked or shown
  • “Default Title” is not hiding real options

Fit

  • Fit note exists when returns spike on fit (true to size, runs small, relaxed, cropped)
  • Who it is for / not for is stated when useful

Compatibility

  • Supported models, sizes, or standards are named
  • Exclusions are named (“not for 16-inch laptops”)
  • What’s included vs sold separately is clear

Material / composition

  • Main materials listed in text (not only in an image)
  • Care instructions if shoppers ask
  • Allergen / sensitive claims only if reviewed and true

Delivery

  • Processing time stated (when you ship)
  • Link to shipping page for rates and regions
  • Preorder / made-to-order delays called out on the product

Returns

  • Return window and condition stated or linked
  • Final-sale items marked clearly
  • No product promise that fights the returns page

Expected result: A punch list of missing fields per SKU.

Step 4: Put delivery and returns where shoppers look

Product pages should not invent a different shipping story than the policy page.

Checklist:

  • Footer links to shipping and returns
  • Product description links the same pages when delivery or returns matter
  • Confirmation emails repeat the same windows
  • Chat (if you use it) quotes the same published rules

Policy automation tips: How to Automate Shipping, Returns, and Refund Policy Questions.

Expected result: One source of truth for delivery and returns.

Step 5: Decide page vs chat vs human

Question typePrefer on the pageOK in chat if page has the factKeep human
Size / fit / material / compatibilityYesYesCustom fit disputes
Delivery rulesShipping page + short PDP noteYesAddress or customs edge cases
Returns rulesReturns pageYesException / goodwill asks
“Will this look good on me?”Fit guidance + photosLimitedStyle preference judgment
“Can you discount / rush / promise X?”RarelyNo as a promiseYes

Expected result: Chat repeats published facts. It does not invent promises.

Step 6: Re-test like a shopper before checkout

On each fixed product:

  1. Open the PDP on mobile.
  2. Ask the six question types out loud (or in chat).
  3. Try to add to cart without leaving the page for a second search.
  4. Note any answer that still needs a new tab or a support email.

If you use Appifire, re-ask the same questions after product sync and compare replies to the page (How to Improve Product and Order Answers in Appifire AI Chat).

Expected result: Fewer “I couldn’t find…” moments between PDP and checkout.

Common failures and fixes

FailureLikely causeFix
Shoppers still email for sizeChart missing or variants unclearAdd chart + rename variants
Chat invents compatibilitySpecs only in photosPut model list in description text
“Fast shipping” complaintsVague marketing lineState processing time + link policy
Return fights after saleFinal sale not markedMark final sale on PDP and policy
Good page, wrong chat answerStale sync or thin ingestRe-sync; keep facts in description body

Verification checklist

  • Top 10 sellers pass size, material, and delivery checks that apply
  • Fit or compatibility checked on every high-return or high-question SKU
  • Shipping and returns links work from PDP and footer
  • No product promise fights the policy page
  • Same questions answered consistently in chat (if live)
  • Missing items have owners and due dates

When to escalate to a human

Escalate (or keep out of auto answers) when:

  • The shopper needs a custom exception or discount
  • Safety, medical, or legal claims need review
  • Fit advice depends on body or medical factors you do not collect
  • Delivery is already late on a placed order (status + support path)

How Appifire AI Chat solves this

Pre-checkout questions are shopping questions. Appifire AI Chat answers them on the storefront from your published catalog and store knowledge when those facts exist in Shopify.

What Appifire provides for each problem

Pre-checkout needHow Appifire AI Chat addresses it
Size, fit, material, compatibility asksRetrieves synced product text (title, description, type, vendor, tags, variants)
Show the product while answeringProduct cards with View Product / Get More Info for matching published products
Delivery and returns rulesAnswers from Knowledge Hub website knowledge and FAQ when you prepare those pages
Same facts for shoppers in chatStore-scoped RAG over published, active products
Keep promises honestPrompt rules push against inventing store facts; empty knowledge can fall back to a safe “not enough information” style reply
Predictable trialFree plan includes 500 AI replies/month, plus paid options when you need more

How Appifire differs from common alternatives

ApproachTypical gap before checkoutAppifire AI Chat
PDP only, no chatShoppers still ask in natural languageConversational answers from the same catalog text
FAQ widgetStatic; weak on SKU-level fitGrounded product Q&A from synced products
Generic AIMay invent specsStore-scoped retrieval; does not invent missing store specs as truth
Live chat onlyStrong judgment; slow or offline for FAQsAlways-on storefront help for repeat product questions
Helpdesk macrosAgents paste specs not on the pagePush facts into Shopify so page and chat match

Honest limits: Appifire does not raise conversion by itself. It cannot invent size charts or materials you never wrote. It does not complete checkout in chat. Policy answers are not refund approvals. Thin pages stay thin after sync. The Free plan includes 500 AI replies per month. Check current usage and paid options in your Appifire billing screen.

Next product steps

Next action

This week: take 10 sellers. Run the size, fit, compatibility, material, delivery, and returns checklist. Fix every gap that shows up in real shopper questions. Re-read each PDP on your phone. When the page can answer those six types, chat can too. When the page cannot, fix the page before you blame the tool.
