What Counts as an Appifire AI Reply?

Learn what counts as an Appifire AI reply on Free and Pro: one assistant message per shopper turn, what does not count, and where to check usage.

You will learn what counts as an Appifire AI reply for usage and billing, what does not count, and where to confirm the number in Billing. When you finish, you can explain Free reply caps and Pro wallet spend without guessing.

For plan prices and resets, see Appifire Billing and Credits Explained. For hitting the Free cap or an empty wallet, see What Happens When You Reach the Appifire Reply Limit?.

Direct answer

One AI reply = one assistant message returned to a storefront shopper after they send a chat message (one successful chat turn that produces a bot reply).

  • The shopper’s message is not a separate billable reply.
  • Free plan (reply-cap path): each such assistant reply usually adds 1 to this month’s Free reply count.
  • Pro / credit-wallet path: each such turn spends a variable dollar amount from the AI credit wallet (not a fixed “1 credit = 1 reply” sticker price).
  • Always confirm the live limit and balances in Billing and on pricing. Marketing Free allowance is 500 AI replies/month; your shop’s Billing screen is the source of truth.

Prerequisites

  • Access to Appifire Billing for the shop
  • Know whether the shop is on Free or Pro (paid)
  • Optional: a storefront preview to run a controlled test question

What counts (yes)

Shopper actionCounts as an AI reply? Why
Asks a product, policy, or order question and gets a bot answerYesOne assistant message returned
Taps Get More Info on a product card (sends a follow-up message)YesNew shopper turn → new assistant reply
Asks again in the same threadYes (each turn)Each bot reply is its own unit
Gets a short “I don’t have enough info” / clarifying bot message from the chat pipelineUsually yesAn assistant message was still returned for that turn
Order lookup that returns status, not-found, or a clear error message in chatUsually yesStill a completed chat turn with a bot reply

Rule of thumb: if the bubble shows a new bot message after the shopper sent something, treat it as a reply for usage.

What does not count (no)

ActionCounts?Why
Shopper opens the chat bubble onlyNoNo assistant message generated
Shopper types but never sendsNoNo turn completed
Taps View Product onlyNoOpens the PDP; does not send a chat message
You edit products in Shopify AdminNoCatalog work is not a storefront reply
You run Data Sync or save Knowledge HubNoNot a shopper chat reply (platform may still use AI behind the scenes for ingest; that is not the Free “reply” counter shoppers see)
You browse Chats / logs in adminNoReading history is free

Free plan vs Pro: how the same “reply” is metered

Free (monthly reply cap)

  1. Billing shows replies used vs the monthly Free limit for the shop.
  2. After each counted assistant reply on the Free cap path, used count goes up by 1.
  3. When used reaches the limit, new AI replies are blocked until you upgrade or wait for the monthly reset (UTC day 1).
  4. If a Free shop still has a leftover USD wallet balance (for example after a cancel), chat may use the wallet path instead of the Free reply counter until that balance is spent. Confirm which path Billing implies before you coach the merchant.

Pro (credit wallet)

  1. Subscription is $20/month with monthly included AI credits (confirm amount in Billing).
  2. Each assistant reply turn deducts its actual variable cost from the wallet (model and token use can change the amount).
  3. There is no single fixed “price per reply” on Pro.
  4. When the wallet is empty, buy credit packs or wait for the next included credits (see Billing).

Common merchant questions

Does a long answer count as more than one reply?

No. Length does not multiply the Free reply counter. One assistant message = one Free reply unit. On Pro, a longer answer can cost more dollars from the wallet because token use can be higher.

Do product cards add an extra reply?

Showing cards under a reply does not add a second Free count by itself. Get More Info does, because it sends a new shopper message and gets a new bot reply. See How Product Cards and Get More Info Work in Appifire Chat.

Do failed or empty questions still count?

If the shopper sent a message and the widget received a bot reply (including a short fallback), expect it to count. If the API blocked the turn before a reply (for example limit already exceeded), there should be no new successful reply to count. Check Billing and the time of the test (UTC).

Are admin test questions on the live storefront free?

No special free lane. Tests on the real widget use the same Free count or Pro wallet as shoppers. Prefer a staging theme or a quiet window if you are near the Free cap.

How to verify on Billing

  1. Open Appifire → Billing.
  2. Note plan: Free or Pro.
  3. Free: read replies used vs limit for this month.
  4. Pro: read credit balance and any “replies this month” / usage stats shown.
  5. Send one storefront test question. Refresh Billing. Confirm Free used rose by 1, or Pro balance moved.
  6. If numbers look wrong, note shop domain, plan, UTC time, and whether the bot reply appeared, then use the troubleshooting playbook.

Limits and non-goals

  • This page defines usage units, not legal billing advice.
  • Live Billing and pricing win if copy and screens differ.
  • Appifire does not bill per product card impression or per View Product click.
  • Ingest/sync costs are not the same meter as the Free monthly reply counter.
  • Order lookup still needs a usable order number and the right Shopify access; a not-found reply can still use a chat turn.
