How to Find Missing Information in Shopify Product Descriptions
Find gaps in Shopify product descriptions using support questions, PDP tests, and a simple miss log, then fix the highest-traffic SKUs first.
You will find missing information in Shopify product descriptions using real support questions and a live-page test. You will leave with a miss log and a fix order. Finding gaps is not the same as rewriting every field. For the rewrite templates, see How to Prepare Shopify Product Data for Accurate AI Answers. For a full buy-ready PDP pass, see Shopify Product Page Checklist.
When this applies
Use this guide if:
- Support answers product facts from memory, Slack, or supplier PDFs
- Shoppers ask the same “what’s included / will it fit / what material?” questions
- AI chat sounds vague on products you know well
- Descriptions are long on vibe and short on specs
Pause a deep hunt if:
- Products are still draft or should not be sold
- Pricing or inventory systems are broken (fix ops first)
- You have no owner who can edit Admin this week
What you need first
- Your top 10 sellers and 5 high-question or high-return products.
- The last 30 product-related contacts (email, chat, DMs).
- Shopify Admin access to open each product’s description.
- A simple spreadsheet or doc for the miss log (columns below).
- Optional: storefront AI chat to re-test after you fix and sync (What Is an AI Shopping Assistant?).
Step 1: Build a miss log from support questions
Copy product questions from the last 30 contacts. Ignore refund fights and pure WISMO status for this pass (those are different jobs).
For each question, fill one row:
| Column | What to write |
|---|---|
| Question | Shopper’s words |
| Product / SKU | Handle or title |
| Fact type | Size, fit, material, what’s included, compatibility, care, shipping promise on PDP, other |
| Where we answered from | PDP / policy / Slack / memory / supplier sheet |
| On the live page? | Yes / Partial / No |
| Fix owner | Name |
| Priority | High if top seller or weekly ask |
Expected result: A list of gaps tied to real demand, not a guess about “better SEO copy.”
Step 2: Run the 2-minute live-page test
Open the live PDP on mobile. Without Admin or Slack, try to answer the miss-log questions for that SKU.
Score each fact:
| Score | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Found | Clear in visible text |
| Image-only | Only in a photo, size chart image, or lifestyle shot |
| Hidden | Only in a metafield, tab, or app block shoppers (or your AI sync) may miss |
| Missing | Not on the page at all |
Mark Image-only and Hidden as gaps for AI and for many shoppers. Appifire’s product answers use synced fields such as title, description, type, vendor, tags, and variants. Metafield-only facts that never appear in that synced text will not show up in chat today.
Expected result: Each miss-log row has Found / Image-only / Hidden / Missing.
Step 3: Check the description body for empty “slots”
Even without a ticket, scan the description for empty slots your category usually needs:
| Slot | Missing if… |
|---|---|
| What’s included | Pack count or accessories never stated |
| Materials | Fabric or ingredients never named |
| Dimensions | Size exists as a variant name only (“Large”) with no measurements |
| Fit / who it’s for | Fashion or furniture with no fit note |
| Compatibility | “Works with…” never listed for accessories or parts |
| Care / use | Returns depend on care rules that are unpublished |
| Limits | What it is not for is never said (drives returns) |
Add any empty slot on a top seller to the miss log even if nobody asked this week. Silence can mean shoppers left instead of emailing.
Expected result: A second set of gaps from structure, not only from tickets.
Step 4: Prioritize what to fix first
Do not rewrite the whole catalog on day one. Rank like this:
- High: Top sellers + weekly questions + Missing or Image-only
- Medium: High-return SKUs with fit/compatibility gaps
- Later: Long-tail SKUs with rare asks
For each High row, write the smallest text fix (one paragraph or bullet list) you will paste into the description. Keep supplier jargon out. Use shopper words from the miss log.
Expected result: A short fix queue you can finish this week.
Step 5: Confirm after you edit
- Publish the description change.
- Re-run the live-page test for that SKU’s miss-log questions.
- If you use Appifire, run a product sync (or wait for your normal sync) so RAG sees the new text.
- Ask the same questions in storefront chat and compare to the page.
- Close the miss-log row only when the live page (and chat, if used) both pass.
Expected result: Gaps are closed in the source of truth, not only in a team doc.
Common failures and fixes
| Failure | Fix |
|---|---|
| Auditing vibes (“needs better storytelling”) | Use support questions and the Found/Missing scores |
| Fixing FAQ but leaving the PDP empty | Put SKU facts on the product description (FAQ vs source of truth) |
| Specs only in metafields | Surface them in description text if shoppers or chat need them |
| Size chart as a blurry image only | Add key measurements in text or a linked HTML guide |
| Fixing draft products | Publish/active products only matter for storefront AI that filters drafts |
| Boiling the ocean | Top 10 sellers first |
| No re-test after sync | Chat can lag until product sync/ingest runs |
Verification checklist
- Miss log built from at least 30 recent product questions
- Top 10 sellers scored with Found / Image-only / Hidden / Missing
- Empty slots (included, materials, dimensions, fit, compatibility, care) checked
- High-priority fix queue is ≤ what you can edit this week
- Edited PDPs pass the live-page test without Slack
- Optional: Appifire product sync done and chat re-tested
- Owner assigned for the next monthly miss-log pass
When to escalate to a human (on the storefront)
Finding and publishing facts does not replace people for:
- Refunds, goodwill, and exceptions
- Damaged items and carrier claims
- Safety or regulated claim edge cases
- Angry complaints

How Appifire AI Chat helps once gaps are visible
If your job is stop guessing which description holes break shopper and AI answers, Appifire makes misses obvious: chat can only use synced published, active product text. A miss log plus sync turns “the bot is dumb” into “this SKU never stated materials.”
What Appifire provides
| Finding gaps | How Appifire AI Chat helps |
|---|---|
| Test if text is answer-ready | Ask the miss-log questions in storefront chat after sync |
| Show the right product while answering | Product cards (image, title, price, View Product / Get More Info) |
| Keep answers store-scoped | RAG over synced title, description, type, vendor, tags, variants |
| Policy questions mixed into product chat | Knowledge Hub website knowledge + FAQ when prepared |
| Still need a person | Talk-to-human contact handoff (WhatsApp → support email → admin email) |
| Trial while you fix the catalog | Free plan includes 500 AI replies/month; Pro $20/month + credits |
How this differs from common alternatives
| Approach | Typical gap | With a miss log + Appifire |
|---|---|---|
| Gut-feel copy refresh | Fixes tone, misses specs shoppers ask | Ticket-driven gap list |
| FAQ-only widget | Never forces PDP completeness | Chat fails loudly when description is empty |
| Agents only | Knowledge stays in heads | Published text becomes the shared source |
| Full catalog rewrite project | Stalls for months | Top-seller miss log ships this week |
Honest limits: Appifire does not invent missing materials, fit, or certifications. It does not read metafield-only facts outside the synced product path today. It does not complete checkout in chat. Draft products stay out of RAG and cards. Thin pages stay thin after sync. See How Appifire Uses Shopify Product Information to Answer Questions and Ecommerce Product Data Audit.
